Save money burn fat, instead of oil!

Last week I went to work by bike a couple of times. It saves me 9 € on gas and of course some more money for not using it in the end (no repairs, tires will last longer, etc).
It is almost 29km away so in the morning it is hard sometimes to wake up earlier and do the trip, but once done I am always happy about having done the cycling. Usually the way back is nice, too, becuase the weather gets nicer. Well, one time I last week on my way back home I got caught up in a storm with hail and loads of rain and couldn't ride on for like 40 minutes. I was also freezing and lots of my stuff in my backpack got wet. Anyways... it is still a good thing to do. For me, for our families bank account, for the environment.
Need to get to bed now to get up early enough tomorrow morning.
Here's thoughts on this subject by another being: 5 reasons to cycle to work

Open water season has begun!

Yo! I am happy to anounce the opening of the open water season in the Ruhr Area in western germany.
Went lakeswimming today for the second time after yesterday. It feels so so good. Not for my pal who was with me (first time swimming in a lake in a wetsuit), but I love to swim there again. My hotspot is the 6-Seen-Platte in Duisburg-Wedau (close to the Stadium of MSV Duisburg). 6-Seen-Platte means 6 lakes area. I usually go for the Wolfssee. Where I usually hang out, there is a nice, small sandy beach. You can also have barbecues there, it has supergood running routes. It just pleases all my needs.

I have been interviewed for another nice blog you should check out called beVegt. It will be online in the first week of June!

I am very happy of having done a few trainings with a guy from my Triathlon Club "Nordtriathleten" and finding a new buddy with whom I did quite a few trainings already. Luckily he is also vegan, so we're now the vegan triathlete power duo, when we're running, cycling or swimming around.
Actually he is the only other real vegan triathlete near my hometown I know, and the other way round, so we're quite happy. This might sound homosexual to some, but it is not... Just happy of having a trainingbuddy with a similar ethical mindset!

This is how to make healthy Kartoffelpuffer/Reibekuchen (potato pancakes):
grate potatoes
add wheat flour, wheat germs, soy flour, onions, nutmeg and oatflakes and make a dough out of it.
Fry the dough (in the size of the palm of a hand) in a pan.
Wait until it is golden.
Eat with apple puree!

Two of my 4th grade schoolboys thought more critically towards vegetarianism. I have strengthened their thoughts and now they claim to be veggies. I ahve brought them a few things to try out (schnitzel, meat slices) and they even made the schools canteen go veggie for one week. I am happy and proud.
Another kdi just told me today that he and his father went to a sheeps slaughterhouse a few days ago and he doesn't want to eat meat again. We'll see if they will maintain, but at least they got an image of how cruel the meat industry is and how easy it is to live an alternative and healthy way.

Cycling 200km, recovery music

I have read about the results of music after races. Scientist say that you can recover 20% faster with your fave music playing right after your competition. american runnersworld german article
When I come back home after a tough training or race I always like to put this on and it makes me chill out:

On Sunday April 28th I have joined my first ever RTF in Dorsten. Me and my clubmates went there by bike, cycled the 151km route and cycled back. The food provided on the route was nice (vegan müslibars, apples, breadrolls with seeds and tea) and the whole thing was totally worth the 6€. I will definitely take part in one of these RTFs more often. It was also my longest bikeride ever, but it felt good, although I couldn't hang on with the faster dudes on my team. Anyways... I can really recommend RTFs. Might not be news to anyone, but was to me.

On mondays I do take part on a testing by a sports scientist in Duisburg. I have to warm up differently every monday and then run a 5km race. Last week I ran my personal best (only ran 5km once in some hilly wood race) in 18.23min.

A friend of mine's friend had just created a vegan protein powder and needs some financial help before it will see the light of day. Here's the link to his advertisment. I hope it will see the light of day soon!

Training April 18th - 28th
18th: Did 2h of spinning (fatburner and power cycling)
19th: Swam 3,4km
20th: Training with my kids from school for their Halfmarathon Relay in Herne: 25min plus 5 min, slow pace
21st: Ran the Bleilochlauf in Schleiz (24km) in 1.39h. Ended 2.25min faster than last year. Climbed two routes later on in the climbing hall of the SEZ. Muscles sore!
22nd: Had to support my schoolkids on the HM relay so after these 21km my muscle got even more sore. Went to the Sauna and slept there for an hour.
23rd: Had a Thaimassage. Felt better. At the testing I had to run 5km in 20min and then 5km all out. Needless to say my muscles were still sore.
24th: Went swimming early in the morning. Training was exhausting. Muscles felt better.
25th: Lifted weights and did exercises for stability. Not much else. Tired!
26th: 53 min running incl. 3 sprints
27th: 63 min cycling on my fitnessbike for strength endurance, 2.8km swimming
28th: 90 min running incl. sprints, exercises, 6x3 min hillruns.

Show, Link, Bleilochlauf

So this is the next HC show that I am putting up.

Apart from this I have enjoyed reading this inspiring and nice blog, which also deals with nutrition and sports, but only in german, sorry!
Apart from that I have placed third at the Bleilochlauf in Saalburg-Kloster in Thuringia. It is a challenging 24km run with about 17km of trails and some elevation difference. My bro Seb thought it was too much climbing. Last year I have placed second, but this year I was 2.20 min faster. It is a real nice run and always awesome to hang out there with my fave dudes from the Team Iron Mind. I have also driven there with my fellow vegan runner Jan-Albert Veenema and his girlfriend Tessa (who placed 3rd woman on 12km!!!). He brought me some sportsfood and the gel and bar really tasted amazing! Too bad he broke his foot a couple of weeks ago and couldn't run himself. Good for me though. If he had competed I would probably have not placed third, but fourth ;-)

The TEAM IRON MIND
We had 4 cakes, thanks to Tobi and Freddy!!!

I have placed 3rd!
After the run we have basically chilled out with soup, cakes and a little nap in the boat "Helga".
"Helga" was our mainbase. We slept and ate there and sorted our equipment in there. Nice!
Training April 5th (Still in France)- 15th
5th: I ran with Hagen for 20 min, then we grabbed bikes and went quickly to the boucherie. I have climbed 4 routes and we ran back from the rocks to our guesthouse (37min).
6th: Just 25min running, then cycling to the bakery in the morning and only climing afterwards, nothing else!
7th: Got back home so I have cycled 70 min on my fitnessbike incl. endurance strength
8th: Ran 24km around Langenfeld in 103min incl. 83 min at halfmarathon pace.
9th: Regeneration
10th: 2.8km swimming in the morning, cycling to the gym, 30 min workout, 2h fitnessbike, Sauna and back home on the bike
11th: 3.1km swimming in the morning. Short 13 min run instead of aiting in front of the indoor climbing centre "Bergwerk" in Dortmund. Climbed there and went to the Sauna which is included there afterwards.
12th: swimming 3km, 62 min easy running in the evening.
13th: 3km swimming in the morning
14th: Cycling with Teammate Florian towards Wuppertal to take photos for team. Pretty hard cycling to Wu-Tal fourth and back. It is very hilly!

16th: running ca. 10km and got my  lactat levels tested.
17th: 3km swimming, 40 min kettlebellworkout, 40 min of Yoga

Meeting a positively crazy dude during swim training/ Climbing (and running) in the Ardeche/France/ List of vegan climbing shoes

Meeting a positively crazy dude during swim training/ Climbing (and running) in the Ardeche/France/ New TV show appearance with Björn Moschinski

I had to hurry up with training this week since I knew I was neither going to ride my bike nor to swim so I wanted to have the bike sessions done at least, before leaving for rock climbing in the Ardeche/France.
So well... my last swim training took place on Friday 31st. I went to the Südpool in Herne directly after school. I have seen another dude training real hard. He looked a lot like a triathlete (trained body and tanned) so we started talking. He told me he will start off this season with an Ironman 70.3 (half the Ironman distance) and do 3 full Ironman challenges throughout the year. Crazy dude! I have also discovered something on his upper chest that looked like a broken bone at first sight. Later on he told me he has a (hartpacemaker) but he also had a chemotherapy but finished an Ironman a couple of months later. Real crazy dude... but much respect for his motivation and eagerness from my side!

So on Friday evening I got picked up by a van packed full of teachers that want to complete the teachers qualification for climbing and this time in the Ardeche in France, outside on real rocks. It has been a nice overnight drive and I didn’t have to drive until 8 in the morning, so I just drove the last hour and went running directly until the other van arrived. I just went up the long road to our guest house La Residence du Chassezac and turned around after 25 min. A few minutes later the other van overtook me and offered to take me to the house but I just ran back. 50 min in total, pretty nice for a morning run in the sun.
Little swimming session
Abseiling
Le Chassezac captured from the rocks.
So this was our first day!
Then we had breakfast and afterwards went to our first rock climbing session. Amazing view from the rocks onto the river “Chassezac”. Around twenty degrees and we’re sliding down the rope towards the bank of the river. Yes! Afterwards me and 2 others went back by feet. We went through the river (it is not deep at all) and climbed up to the pension. I unintentionally slided down three times and got scratches on my belly and arms. We did a few exercises after that and then cleaned ourselves in the pool (cold, cold pool!).

The cold pool.

Abseiling

Right before the first abseiling on the first day.

Climbing up

Heavy route

The bible of climbing in the Ardeche Region
So the following week I was experiencing beautiful nature, breathing clean air, listening to creeks and rivers, discovering several different birds of prey and climbing, climbing, climbing! The Ardeche is just beautiful for outdoor sports. Many people do kanooing, climbing, cycling or walking and there are many camping sites. We were lucky that the weather stayed very nice. We had more than 20 degrees Celsius on the first three days and did our run back to the apartment topless (the other two sport nerds and me).
Many germans were there and also many families spent their vacation like this. In April it is still affordable and not too busy. The temperature is also mild, which benefits outdoor sports.

Training March 27th-April 4th
27th: swimming 3km in the morning and cycling 81km with my mate Florian in the evening
28th: 1h running, nothing special
29th: 65 min cycling on my fitnessbike for strength endurance
30th: 70 min running incl. 3 sprints
31st: 3km swimming and meeting the (posi) crazy triathlete
April 1st: 50 min running in Maisonneuve in the morning, climbing in front of the camping site (Mazet Plage), back to our guesthouse running and with backpack on. Then stretch and toning Yoga outside in the garden as the sun set. Awesome!
2nd: 80 min running searching for the bakery and finding this nice castle, climbing and then again 25 min running back, exercises outside
3rd: 35 min running, climbing, 35 min running back home and through Chandolas.
4th: 18min cycling really fast to the bakery, then climbing in Chauzet and riding the mountainbike back from Chauzon to Maison Neuve. Beautiful villages on the route! Awesome! Then we went running with 3 guys to the other bakery and did several speedups. We did 8,7km in 41min and did exercises after this again before jumping in to the pool.

Vegan NY/ trying to cook "Eiernockerln" + training this week

One pic from the book

Vegan NY is a set of images in a photobook shot by a friend of mine while she was in NY hanging out with parts of the vegan community in NY. The book covers different aspects such as social life, demonstrations, etc. Check it out!

I have also tried to cook "Eiernockerln", which is an austrian recipe and usually made with loads of eggs. MY grandparents came from Transsylvania and I guess while Transsylvania was part of the Austrian-Hungarian-Kingdom the recipe made its way there.
Anyways... I altered the recipe to make it vegan.

"Eiernockerl" with strawberry jam

Interview with the dutch vegan runner Jan Albert Veenema

Jan Albert and me got into contact through a dutch hardcore messageboard I used to promote my blog and he reads occasionally. We sort of knew each other through HC shows and just found out we got a common passion and the only inspiring, almost cruelty-free (VEGAN) lifestyle. So I wanted to interview him since he's such a good runner and might also inspire you. He definitely has inspired me, since I might try some of his track intervall trainings and we'll be running a race together soon!

Interview with Jan Albert Veenema, questions by me, pics under permission by JA Veenema.

How long have you been vegan?

I have been vegan for about 15 years now. Before that I've been vegetarian for a year, but in that time I started reading a lot about veganism and concluded that I wasn't consistent enough. Also listening to bands like Earth Crisis and reading books like Animal Liberation and Diet for a New America contributed to my beliefs.
I actually became vegetarian through an ex girlfriend who turned vegetarian during our relationship, so I kinda got used to it and started eating more meat-free myself. The actual point for me to turn vegan was made by a friend of mine who stayed at my house for a couple of days and taught me how easy it was to cook vegan. From that point on I basically never ate animal products again. I can still remember the first time I said no to cheese: on my fathers birthday a bowl with snacks was presented to me and I said no. That was the also the first time I had to explain to my family what veganism stands for, and a lot of explaining is still necessary.
Me turning vegan kinda went together with me becoming straight edge. The only thing I did (a lot) was smoking weed and after watching a dutch documentary about animal liberation (Zembla- brandende dierenliefde, in english: burning love for animals) I decided it was enough and stopped my addiction because I thought there was something that needed my attention and that couldn't be done while sitting stoned on a couch.
I'm not straight edge anymore, I'm occasionally enjoying a beer but I still respect and honor the values. I just can't understand why "sell-outs" start drinking like crazy once they drop the edge. For me it stops when the alcohol takes over my concentration or control. I want to keep control over my mind and body and not want a substance to take over.

When did you start with sports. what is you sports biography, so to say?

In my younger days I played a little soccer, but never played a game. It was because my friends went doing it so I had to do it as well. When I quit I've always continued playing soccer in the streets for fun though.
Later on I went on rescue swimming which included grips to get drowning persons out of the water, swimming with clothes on, swimming underwater and also diving to the bottom of the pool to collect rubber mats or a big plastic lifesize puppet.
I always enjoyed the gym classes at school but never took any action to go on another sport. My parents never pushed me to join a sport, but nowadays they're the most loyal supporters ever!
When I was about 23 years old I occasionally went to a fitness centre but quickly figured pumping weights was not for me. I enjoyed the cardio stuff way better, and did a coopertest (12 min run) on the treadmill. I forgot about the distance I ran by the way. Two colleagues of mine did a 7km run twice a week and they asked me to join them and it went really well. After doing that for a couple of weeks another colleague told me about an organised 10km run in my hometown and I ran 41 minutes, on my Air max shoes, so a pretty fast time. Based on that he began writing schedules for me and then everyting went pretty quick. Still I didn't really know what I was doing which resulted in running a marathon half a year after that first 10km race, a crazy thing to do especially since I didn't run any more than 20km in training but still completed it in 3.40.
Totally wasted afterwards but found enough energy to go to a Napalm Death show in the evening.
After about 2-3 years of unguided training I joined the local athletic club where I started doing intervals twice a week, and from then on things went even faster.
So it's been 13 years now and I don't think I'll ever stop running. An advantage I have is that my girlfriend is also a runner (I infected her with the virus) and if you can share such a passion it's so great you can do it together.

Have you been active in the animal rights movement or in hardcore (the common bond we know each other through)?
When I went vegan I did a lot of flyering, did some distro for Animal Truth (Cindy Frey's foundation) and the dutch vegan society, and ofcourse immediately joined organisations like Peta, both the dutch and british vegan society and also the dutch vegetarian society.
Sometimes I went out at night spraypainting "meat is murder" here and there but never got involved in any "real" criminal activities. I must admit that I used to be more extreme and outgoing, but I will never give up veganism and never avoid discussions.
Maybe it sounds strange if I tell you that I grew up as a metalkid, and am totally into black metal. But gradually discovered lotsa other styles which I loved as well such as grunge, hiphop and hardcore.
The hardcore "scene" is where I feel at home. The people, the shows, the ideals (although they doesn't seem to be as important as back in the days) and ofcourse the music is what attracts me.
I also go to metalshows because I want to see my favorite bands on stage but I like the atmosphere at HC shows way better.
As far as the HC activism concerns I did a magazine once (in the year 2000, it was called Truce and had interviews with Shockwave, Spirit 84, actually the first Heaven Shall Burn interview and more). Never been in a band but a very regular visitor of shows and buyer of records.

What is your week like? How much, what, when and how long do you train?
That depends on where I'm training for but mostly I'm doing 5 sessions a week, divided in 2 track sessions, a short (8-15km) and long distance run (>20km) and a race or forest/hill training.
The average kilometrage ranges from 60-100km and sometimes even more.
It takes a lot of my time but that's what hobbies or passions do and I couldn't imagine living without running.
Here's a recent week from my log:

mo 12km 58min
tu   track training 6x1000m in 3.35 with 400m recoverytime after each one. Also long warming up with stretching, groundwork (core-stability, push ups and sit ups) and running technique. Total 16km, 2 hrs. I always run to the track and back home which is 3,5km one way.
th  track training 3 series of 400m-300m-200m-100m in 75sec-56sec-37sec-18sec. After each tempo 200m pause and in between series 400m. Again long warming up. Total 15km, 2hrs.
sat  10km race personel best time 33.27, 8th place overall. Total 16km
sun  32 km long run for marathon. 2hrs 20min.

So that's a weektotal of 91km divided into 5 sessions.

What do you usually eat or what is integral part of your nutrition? Any "secrets" you now want to share?
I'm a pretty conventional eater so to say. Lotsa potatoes, pasta, chinese noodles, curry's, beans and so on. Anything rich in carbohydrates is good. Also any kind of vegetables suits me fine and I try to eat carrots, spinach, sprouts and so on for the necessary nutrition.
I'm convinced that a vegan diet can replace a meat/dairy based one without a problem, as long as you eat healthy and varied. And if you compare the diet of any pro athlete with ours there are way more similarities than differences so that means we're on the right track!
I'm taking some B12 vitamins on an irregular basis, but I've never experienced any sufficiency of any kind and also a sport test didn't conclude in a shortage of anything. I think my body adapted to eating vegan and sporting so much.
The day before a race I always eat pasta, maybe that's a mental thing but it never proved me wrong. During long runs or races I take gels, any brand will do, but lately the SiS ones are favorite here. Also their sportsdrink is very nice.
After racing my stomach can't take too much sweet drinks or food, I've experienced some breakdowns after finishing, once even resulting in first aid help. So I wait until my body is kinda calm again before refilling my energy.
Being not straight edge anymore I really can enjoy a nice Belgian beer, but no more than two, because I just can't handle it.

What are your personal bests so far?

3000m track 9.33
5km 16.33 (during 10km race)
10km 33.27
15km 52.37
21.1km (half marathon) 1.14.36
30km 1.52.58
42,2km (full marathon) 2.49.28
50km 3.45.27
60km 4.58.25

What are your expectations and goals for 2012?
My main focus in the first half of this year will be the "Slachte marathon" overhere in Friesland which is organised only once every 4 year and runs from point to point. It goes over an old in-land dyke and includes a few miles off road and two steep bridges. I'm training for a time sub 2.45 or even 2.40. But that also depends on the weather since it runs from east to west and if you have 42kms of headwind it gets difficult.
I have to say my preparation is going very well, since I ran personal best times on the 10km and half marathon lately so the main thing is to stay healthy, sharp and be in the best shape on june 16th!
This fall I'll probably be running another marathon and the 50km race in Winschoten as preparation for that. Next year I'll be starting for the second time in the "60 van Texel", a 60km race on the island of Texel and heavy as fuck! Last year I made my ultra debut in this race and it was one hell of a debut. The hottest easter weekend in 100 years and I decided to run 60km!
The course included about 12km of sand/beach, dunes, forest and endless-looking roads with constantly the burning sun on your head. The goal was to run 4.30 pace but after 5km when we reached the beach we had to let go of that schedule. Finishing was the most important thing and I managed to just finish sub 5 hours.
The training for it went great. I prepared with a friend and together we did a lot of training including a 4 hour beach run and a trainingweekend in which we ran the whole course in 2 days, so 30km on saturday and 30km on sunday.
The only thing you don't have control over is the weather so hopefully next year it is on our side!

What sponsors do you have and do they also know about your vegan way of life or even support this?
I've been lucky enough to get sponsored for my shoes and clothing by Running Center, a specialized running store, together with Mizuno sportswear. For an almost symbolic low amount of money I get 3 pairs of shoes and a complete outfit every year and lots of discount when I need accessories or sportdrinks. The sponsorship gradually grew since I was a regular customer and running pretty much upfront in races so they decided to sponsor me which ofcourse I couldn't refuse!
They are aware of my veganism but are neither judging nor supporting it. Thing is that if they didn't met me they wouldn't know any vegan, and same counts for my family and colleagues.
At least I'm creating some awareness.

Final words?
Go vegan and keep on running!
